Skyrocketing Education Costs
This month, the last of the college acceptances went out and high school seniors, who have not already committed, were beginning to weed through their options. Among their criteria were academic programs, campus life, location and for many—price.
Interestingly, price was the focus of my conversations with many families this weekend – some with college-age students, others who were merely amazed at what it takes to put one child through four years of either a private and public college today.
The conversation then turned to the cost of education in general and sticker shock at the cost of preschools. Did you know that to send your child to a five day a week preschool for a (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) can run from $7,600 to over $9,000 a year? Did you also know that in-state tuition at the University of Maryland, College Park is less than $9,000 a year?
Where does it end? Simple math says that if you have two children in preschool, at a time when your careers are just starting – it could run upwards of $18,000 a year?
So, here’s the dilemma. We want our children to have a head start educationally. At the same time, the mission is to promote Jewish education from an early age. But, at what point will a Jewish preschool be too costly? As costs to run a preschool continue to grow, and tuition follows suit, should we be looking at how we can make a Jewish preschool affordable?
