Children’s Sports - Who Gets To Play?
Stop by any school or outdoor recreation park and you’ll see countless youth games being played this time of year. Children as young as four and five play on organized teams, sharing fields with those upwards of high school age.
I think one of the hardest volunteer positions is that of a coach to a young children’s sports team. You are molding youngsters who want to play the game – some talented and some not – and teaching them both skills and teamwork. As they grow, you want to make them see their strengths and weaknesses and understand that, like life, it’s a team effort and that they may not play all the time.
At the same time, you hope to win (after all, it makes kids feel bad if they’re losing all the time), but in today’s world, you can’t make it all about winning.
And, you have the added responsibility of working with the parents, who often believe their children are athletically gifted (as well as socially and academically). If you play Timmy all the time and Johnny for only 15 minutes, the coach is often criticized. But, there is the balance between a youngster’s self-esteem and picking who is best to help the team. It’s a skill that employees use in the real world.
So, how do you balance all these issues? It seems as if at the earliest years, the goal is to teach everyone skills and how to play together as a team. Equal playing time makes sense. On the other end of the spectrum, at the high school level and beyond, you play your players able to help the team most.
But, at what point do parents and kids have to understand that some children are better than others? Sometimes they may not play all the time and often they may not play the positions they want? You may love offense at lacrosse, but there may be more talented offensive players and you’re a better defensive player? At the same time, in a sport like softball, basketball and baseball, there are either fewer positions or opportunities to “sub” in and get playing time.
It’s a tough question and a balancing act for coaches who have to decide what the teams or the league’s priorities are, while preparing these kids for potential disappointment ahead. And, parents need to figure out how to accept their children’s strengths and weaknesses and respect coaching decisions.

Being a parent isn’t easy but I can’t believe the changes I’ve seen in our youth since I was a kid.
